Not even the natives of Whitstable are quite sure what makes Whitstable
a unique place to visit. A timeless place that creates lasting memories
for children and grown-ups. A slightly old-fashioned place, that reminds
you of those simpler times. As one visitor was once
overheard saying, “its good for your soul, Whitstable”.
Maybe it’s the proud maritime heritage of the town; the working
harbour, the old fishermen’s huts, the sailing barges and yawls
and, of course, those famous oysters. You can still see the old Oyster
yawl “Favourite” on display by the beach and watch the
fishermen unloading the day’s catch, in the harbour.
Perhaps it’s the vast array of individual shops, worldfamous
seafood restaurants, cosy pubs, galleries and the distinctive narrow
alley ways like Squeeze Gut Alley. The Neptune Pub sitting on the
beach exposed to the elements through winter and summer. The real
shops run by local people, selling local produce. The elegant seafood
restaurants frequented by London city types and celebrities.
Or maybe it’s just the fresh sea air of the Swale Estuary, the
stunning sunsets over the Isle of Sheppey, the seabirds, the sight
of
brightly-coloured sailing boats or the working Thames sailing barges
like Greta. The unspoilt empty beaches. Walking out to sea along the
mysterious Tankerton Street that emerges at every low tide. Sheltering
from the westerly breeze, in the lee of the timber groynes that prevent
Whitstable from returning to the sea.
Or maybe it’s the natives themselves, their humour and warmth.
Proud to be connected to the sea for generations, and somehow
less obsessed than some of us, by the trappings of the modern consumer
world. Don’t live your whole life without experiencing
Whitstable. It really could be good for your soul.
